Contraception

Dr Ballance is a GP with a special interest in contraception. There is a form of contraception to suit everyone and it is well worth making sure you take the time to choose one that is right for you and your lifestyle. Apart from the important task of preventing pregnancy some contraceptive options can also offer additional benefits. Many options lighten or stop your period all together and others can offer a reduction in period pain and PMT.

We are happy to take the time to discuss any of the contraceptive options below and answer the questions you may have.

  • Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill

  • Progesterone only Pill

  • Contraceptive Implant

  • Contraceptive Injection

  • Nuvaring

  • Mirena & Copper Coil                                                                                                    For Prices and Advice  Please Click Here

Emergency Contraception

There are now more options for emergency contraception than ever before but we would still encourage you to make an appointment as soon as possible after any episode of unprotected sex as all forms of emergency contraception work best the sooner they are used. Unfortunately none of the options are guaranteed to prevent a pregnancy so we would strongly encourage you to find a regular form of contraception that works for you.

There are now two types of ‘Morning-after Pill’ which can be taken up to 5 days (120 hours) after intercourse. They are both very well tolerated but if you vomit within 2 hours of taking either type of morning-after pill it is important you get a repeat prescription.

The Copper coil is the most effective type of emergency contraception and once inserted will give continued contraceptive cover for up to 10 years. The copper coil can be inserted up to 5 days after your expected date of ovulation giving a much wider window of opportunity than either of the morning-after pills.
