Sex and Contraception

“When is it normal to have sex after having a baby?” is a question we are commonly asked by our patients. Some people are having sex right away after the birth but many couples find it takes some months before they are able to be intimate again. If you have any worries about resuming your sex life after giving birth we are happy to discuss your concerns and offer advice to make the whole experience as easy as possible.

It is important to be aware that many women become fertile again from 3 weeks after giving birth so using contraception is essential if you are having sex after this time. Some contraceptive methods cannot be used whilst you are breastfeeding, but there are still a number of options to choose from which we can go through with you when you are ready.

Breastfeeding

Common breastfeeding problems include thrush, mastitis, blocked ducts and abscesses. These problems need prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent complications. We are female GPs who are experienced at diagnosing and treating common breastfeeding problems and helping mums establish a feeding routine.

Mood Changes

As GPs we see women every week whose mood has been affected since having their child, and we know that there are many more women struggling to feel themselves again who do not seek help. Motherhood brings with it huge financial, social and physical stresses so it is not surprising our ability to cope may well be tested from time to time. If you find that you are not feeling your normal self any more and are struggling to enjoy your new lifestyle, please speak to us about the many options available to you as small changes can often bring huge benefits to yourself and your child.
